She has lost a lot of her confidence in herself, but still keeps up her old routines, seeing them as a sort of lifeline.
BACKGROUND:
History:
- Cossette was no fool. She had inherited all the intelligence and skill that both her parents had, and considering they hunted down, captured, and learnt how mutants worked, mutants far stronger, more powerful, and sometimes with more raw intelligence then them, that was a lot of grey matter. She knew what the term 'buttering up' was, and she knew what a cemetry was to. She also knew that she had seen the brutal massacre of her mother. The scene replayed itself in her mind, over, and over, and over. Her mother had drawn the hairbrush through a little too hard, and she had squealed. Then the terrible spikes of ice had stabbed out of the vans walls and pierced her. Her mother had drawn the hairbrush through a little too hard, and she had squealed. -”Cossette?” She looked up and saw the haggard face of her father. “It's time for your gymnastics class now.” Cossette nodded, and stood up before the scene could start again.
Cossette was only six when her mum had died, apparently killed by mutant extremists. It crushed her father and brother. They all came together again though, and Cossette learned to block out the death of her mother, lest she found more reasons why it was her fault. Some theories were ridiculous, while others were real enough to send chills through her. Her father, Ruben, continued to work just as hard as he had before, if not harder, while Cossette quickly showed herself to be more skilled then previously thought. Her brother recovered the least, always moping, and the bullying that followed afterwards made it worse. Her father rose up in his job as fast as Cossette rose up in her gymnastics. Soon, her dinners with people from her dads work were a regular occurrence, and she quickly learned to wear fancier clothing then track suit pants and a t-shirt. Life got better, till her abilities started to awaken. It was slow, just water freezing here, a small ripple for no apparent reason there, but it soon became far more dangerous.
Cossette watched the water churn with dread. How could she do something like this? Her father was a major part of the mutant research and containment department in Pravus, perhaps the gods had a sense of humor. She took a long shaky breath, trying to stop the waving rise of panic, that only made it harder to control. The growlithe that had been attacking her a moment ago bobbed to the survace of the river, where it gasped for air, before being dragged down by the currents. She wanted to stop killing it so badly, but neither did she really want it to hurt her, as it had been trying to. It was infected, barely sentient, right? That made it ok to kill it right? It bobbed to the surface again, but didn't breath. Dead. Cossette let out the breath she had been holding, and jerked when a voice called out behind her:
“Cossette!” She whipped round, water and ice flying towards her brother before she could stop the well of panic. He practically threw himself backwards as the torrent stopped inches away from his face. She wanted to undo that. Wanted so badly. The look on his face was too much, they both knew about mutants. That they were evil, that one had killed their mother. One with the power to manipulate ice.
“It was you...” He breathed, and Cossette shook her head.
“No! I swear, I didn't! I just started these, I just, I-WAIT!” She screamed as he took off running. The water was already thrumming in line with her emotions, and it was all she could do to not impale him, or drown him like the growlithe. Instead, she created a wall of jagged ic in front of him, icicles long sharp and vicious dared him to try and pass. He jerked as he tried to stop, but fell face down into the spike, impaling himself on several of the vicious shards. Cossette screamed for a long time.
When they found her, she was distraught, and the natural conclusion was reached: Her mothers killer had returned to claim Cossettes brother. Now Cossette walks in fear, fear that she will be found out, fear that she was responsible for her mothers death, fear that she might kill again.
