MAYA DERLETH
31 - MUTANT - FEMALE - BISEXUAL - ANTI-PRAVUS - BOOK-KEEPER
ABOUT THE PLAYER:
OOC Account: Maya
What do you wish to be called?: Also known as Arraxis
Other Characters: N/A
Link to your previous character: N/A
BASIC INFORMATION:
Full Name: Maya Derleth
Nickname(s): N/A
Gender: Female
Age: 31
Allegiance: Anti-Pravus, Noxus, Herself
Occupation (Position) : Second in command of Noxus - book-keeper
Species: Mutant
Powers: Maya has the ability to make her hair grow longer or shorter at will. This happens at a rate of about 0.5 cm a second. She also has the ability to change her hair colour, although this is much more taxing. When she uses her power, it causes a slight burning sensation in the area that increases the longer she uses it. Changing hair colour feels more like the area is on fire.
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE:
Face Claim: Natalia Kaminski – Fate/Zero
Hair colour and hair style: Short, bluish grey hair usually. Her natural hair colour is blonde, but she changed it because no-one took her seriously.
Eye Colour: Blue
Height: 5”8'
Build: Athletic and curvy
Skin tone: White
Other Appearance Information: It's probably more accurate to describe Maya as handsome rather than beautiful. She's got a hawk-like nose and an almost pointed chin, giving her face a rather angular look. Maya's ears are pierced, and she typically has a silver stud in each lobe. Her shoulders are wider than average, and her arms, while not bulging with muscles, possess a strength to them. She's on the tall side for a woman, too. You might mistake her for an attractive man if it weren't for her large breasts that are emphasised by her low-cut, form-fitting crop top. She's rarely seen out of her black trench coat, which she likes for both style and intimidation, and a pair of dark pants for simplicity's sake.
PERSONALITY:
Likes:
- Reading books – Lying down in bed curled up with a good book is a favourite past-time. She prefers thrillers and mysteries, but she'll read just about anything so long as it isn't trash written for the lowest common denominator.
- Steak – A simple, yet nuanced food that is very filling. The right cut, combined with appropriate seasoning and cooking it just right makes for some fine dining.
- Horror – External, internal, mental, physical, supernatural or simply the horror that is man. Scary and shocking stories interest Maya, the more unsettling the better.
- Comedy and Tragedy – In particular stage productions. She's also partial to a bit of opera.
- Running – Keeping in shape is important, and a good run while listening to music is a great way to do so. It's also useful should she need to chase after, or run away, from something.
- Fencing – While she practices kickboxing and enjoys it, and more recently some of the knife techniques of silat, her passion is for fencing. The technique and the elegance are quite appealing to her, even if she is not likely to be using it for actual combat.
- Cocktails – Mixing drinks is a blast with the amount of colours, flavours and odd additions. The woman's pretty good at a lot of the standard ones, but she also likes to experiment, which tends to have varied results.
- Games – Board games, card games, games of chance, and even a few RPGs and turn based strategy games.
- String instruments – Her parents had always hoped that their daughter would play an instrument, but she'd been reluctant when she was younger, and they didn't push. Now that they're dead, she's decided to take up the viola to honour their memory.
- Motorbikes – The roar of the motorbike is freedom. When life's too complicated - usually because she's organised herself into a corner - she likes to let loose and just ride.
- Being respected – Though she tries not to show it, she likes it when she's recognised for her work. A lot of people don't seem to understand how much work she puts into making Noxus the way it is, and she can't help but smile a bit when someone thanks her for whatever little thing she's fixed.
Dislikes:
- Addicts – Maya looks down upon the poor souls who are addicted to drugs. They're slaves to their cravings, and useless without whatever substances they get their kicks from. They can't be relied upon, and she doesn't like that a lot of the gang are addicts as well. Asides from not being able to count on them, it means cutting into potential profits.
- Needless cruelty – Sometimes you need to do bad things to get something done. However, there's no reason to prolong the suffering of another. Typically it's bad business sense, too, and you risk making mistakes. The stick is useless without the carrot.
- Pokemorphs – Almost without fail they're loyal to Pravus. For all she knows they might have had their brains tinkered with as well. Maya's unsure whether they even count as human.
- Poverty – She's at the centre of what happens when there's rampant poverty. She was driven there by a lack of money. It brings out the worst in people, and is often symbolic of a greater problem.
- The criminally wealthy – Not criminal like she is - criminal in just how much they actually have. Many of them are responsible for the problems with society, and seek to keep it that way as they profit from the suffering of others. The hypocrisy of dealing in substances that actually cause suffering is not lost on her.
- Coffee – She could never stand the stuff. Maya prefers tea, or wine. Even the cheapest beer is better!
- Pravus – They killed her parents and rule the region with an iron fist. The only way you wouldn't hate them is if you were part of the problem.
- Waiting – Being made to wait on others is hell. She's ready now, and everyone else knows the right time, and yet she's stuck wasting her time.
- City streets – Crowded streets in particular. She doesn't like crowds, or traffic. They make her uncomfortable, or impatient, or are even dangerous if she's riding her motorcycle.
- Machismo – One of the worst things about gangs is they attract all sorts of young, wannabe macho men. You aren't impressing anyone, least of all Maya. She's also sick of leers and comments about her breasts. Yes, she's seen them, yes, she knows they're large, no, you cannot 'bang those bongos'.
- Constant swearing – It's just uncouth. If every second word that comes out of your mouth is a curse, it just shows how low you really are. There's a time and place for them, and it's not as an adjective for everything.
Strengths:
- Well educated – She was often top her her class in primary and high school, and did well enough to score a scholarship at Avarius University. Her forte is numbers, but she's a believer in constant learning, and does her best to broaden her horizons.
- Sound of mind and body – She's not just well read - she's clever, too. She's also made sure to hone her body, too. She's skilled at kickboxing, and is quite a talented fencer, as well. After joining Noxus she learned how to shoot and how to use a knife. She's always sure to have a weapon on hand just in case.
- Driven – Maya's motivated to strive to be the best she can be. Without her drive to do better the next time, it is likely that she never would have reached the position she now has.
- Disciplined – She's good at focusing on tasks at hand rather than procrastinating, as well as keeping her emotions in check. Of course, she isn't perfect, but that doesn't stop people from thinking she's a workaholic.
- Logical – As a problem solver, she's good at putting two and two together. If there's a sensible reason for something, chances are she'll be able to figure it out. People are trickier, however, if they're not acting in what she sees as their best interests.
Weaknesses:
- Out of touch with peers – She simply doesn't 'get' the average member of Noxus on a deep and meaningful level. She sees herself as better than most of them, too. It doesn't matter whether they alienated her first, or if she simply refused to understand them, but the fact remains that there's a distance between her and them, as the use of the word 'them' demonstrates.
- Can't handle alcohol – As much as she likes a drink here and there, it doesn't take much to get her tipsy. While her size means that drunk is a ways off, she tends to indulge when she feels tipsy.
- Selfish – Her three priorities in life are I, me, and myself. While she's rational in her self-interest, she cares more about herself than others. Maya's mind is like a mental abacus, calculating gains and losses as they affect her.
- Proud – She's got talent and she knows it. Sometimes she thinks she's got more than she's got, and it gets her in trouble. She also doesn't respond well to insults. If someone means what they said, she may laugh it off, but she'll remember for later.
- Overly cautious – Maya's not the sort to take risks. If she's going to act, she wants to be 100% certain that what she does is going to have the intended result. This means lots of time and planning, and lost opportunities. Reacting to crises is also an issue, due to needing prompt responses. There's no time to plan when the building is burning down around you.
Personality:
- Practical – Pragmatism is the order of the day. She may be second in command of a criminal organisation, but that doesn't mean she eats babies. Evil doesn't pay the bills, it draws unwanted attention, and it weighs on the conscience. Of course, being nice is going to make you look weak, and you'll fast find yourself replaced. The right approach for the right situation.
- Assertive – She's confident in herself, her abilities, and her position. Maya's a woman who isn't afraid to speak her mind or take charge of a situation. She'll listen to others, certainly, and if there's someone she believes is more suited to step up, she's able to step down, but she's got her pride, and she's not about to let others step over her.
- Standoffish – People who don't know her very well tend to see her as distant and frosty. However, this is more because she's a bit of an introvert. She finds it easier to be professional and terse with people she isn't familiar with. When she's comfortable with the company she's in, however, she's much more open. Often this involves a lot of smiling and laughter, and perhaps a few drinks, too.
- Tease – Maya's sense of humour is often at the expense of another person. She likes to needle people to see what gets on their nerves, although it's mostly good intentioned.
- Meticulous – She tries to take a calm and measured approach to anything that's of importance to her. The best option is the one that you come to after balancing all of the pros, cons, risks and rewards. Maya's excellent at planning, but she's not very good at reacting to situations that require spur-of-the-moment thinking. Give her the time she needs, however, and she can organise just about anything, from a party to a raid on a Pravus research centre.
BACKGROUND:
History:
Pokemon:
Name: Lamia
Species: Mawile
Level: 64
Gender: Female
Ability: Hyper Cutter
Current Experience: 0/?
Origins: Maya received her as a present for her 16th birthday. This was when Mewtwo first showed up in Kanto, and her parents felt that a pokemon that was both cute and combat ready would be appropriate in case she needed a guardian.
Personality: Lamia's a friendly pokemon and quite open a lot of the time. However, while the friendliness is for the most part genuine, she enjoys wrapping truth with lies and watching people try and unravel the web. She's quite intelligent, too, and often helps with Maya's work. Pranks that involve light injuries are par for course when she's around. She's got a flair for creativity, too. Lamia's known for painting scenes that seem peaceful, but contain a hidden terror. Sometimes she goes for blatant, however, to keep people on their toes.
Attacks:
- Bite
- Sweet Scent
- Crunch
- Sucker Punch
- Iron Defence
- Swords Dance
- Iron Head
- Play Rough
Name: Cromwell
Species: Doublade
Level: 55
Gender: Male
Ability: No Guard
Current Experience: 0/?
Origins: She acquired this one shortly after joining Noxus. She felt like she would need more than just Lamia for protection if things went poorly, and this type of pokemon seems quite appropriate
Personality: Cromwell's not very talkative or sociable. However, he does enjoy competition - mental as well as physical - and talks a little bit more there. When he does, it's with a minimum of fuss and straight to the point. Another thing he likes is elegance of form, whether in combat, in dance, or even in a person's posture. He doesn't like being touched.
Attacks:
- Swords Dance
- Fury Cutter
- Shadow Sneak
- Aerial Ace
- Night Slash
- Power Trick
- Iron Head
- Sacred Sword
Name: Argos
Species: Misdreavus
Level: 43
Gender: Male
Ability: Levitate
Current Experience: 0/?
Origins: Maya felt like she needed help with accounting, and felt a Ghost pokemon would be good at tracking down documents, as well as being cheaper and more reliable than the people around her.
Personality: Argos is, in a word, observant. He's good at noticing discrepancies in forms, as well as reading people. However, he's also very observant of the female form. Maya tolerates him because he's good at his job, but he's also one of the beings that get a rise of proper anger from her. It's his fault that she wears her hair short, since he keeps on pulling on it. Still, they've got a good working relationship, even if one of them gets on the other's nerves.
Attacks:
- Psywave
- Double Team
- Psychic
- Confuse Ray
- Shadow Ball
- Hex
- Psybeam
- Pain Split
Name: Flit
Species: Flygon
Level: 50
Gender: Female
Ability: Levitate
Current Experience: 0/?
Origins: She acquired this pokemon shortly after becoming second in command of Noxus. Maya felt that rapid transport would be something needed for someone who would need to be able to respond to situations across the Citadel, especially if ground transport is unavailable.
Personality: Artemis is rather chatty, and when flying with her, you can certainly expect a conversation. She's very spirited, and eager for anything that looks like it could be a challenge. Just be careful, since she's also on the competitive side, and can be a sore loser. She particularly likes beating boys, since her experience with the gang has shown her that a fair few like to think they're better than girls.
Attacks:
- Sand Tomb
- Sandstorm
- Rock Slide
- Dig
- Dragon Tail
- Dragon Breath
- Hyper Beam
- Fly
ROLE-PLAYING SAMPLE:
Yuki strolled down the streets of Akihabara with a skip in her step. She'd gotten the message from AniMa Complex a few days ago, but now that it was the weekend, she had time to actually go and pick up her order. She'd also have time to browse and see if anything interesting was there, and probably have some lunch, too! She was going on her own, but a few of the girls at GEM247 knew that she'd be coming here. Still, she might have to cut her excursion short, since it looked like it was ready to rain, and in her excitement she'd forgotten her umbrella.
She wore simple clothes - a pale yellow t-shirt and a black skirt, with stockings almost all the way up her leg. She was going to stand out no matter what she did, but Yuki found it was best to just be casual. If you looked like you were trying to hide, people would seek you out. Although, it also helped that she shopped at somewhere innocuous rather than one of the larger stores. It looked a bit run down from the outside, but she'd found that the staff at AniMa Complex were friendly, knowledgeable and hadn't tried to make a big deal about her shopping there.
The door rang as Yuki entered the store, which was filled with anime and manga, as the name implied, but it also sold games - mostly visual novels and doujinsoft - figures, model kits and even tabletop games. The slightly too narrow aisles seemed to loom over the top of her as she couldn't help but skim what was there as she made her way to the front counter.
It looked like Akira was working today - tall and buxom, she didn't look like the kind of person to work here, but she was actually the assistant manager, and a big horror fan with a twisted sense of humour. "Hey, Aki-san, I'm here to pick up my copy of Space Battleship Yamato 2199." She looked up from her book and smiled. "Ahh, Miki, good to see you. I've got it just here." The woman stood up and began rummaging through a shelf that stood tall behind the counter.
She picked up the book that she'd left behind and tried to read the cover, but it was in English. She wasn't the best at the language, but she couldn't make out more than the first word. "Hey, what'cha readin' now? I can't understand this at all." Yuki asked, genuinely curious. Akira had good taste. "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. By H.P. Lovecraft. It's tough reading even for me, but it's best to read this stuff in its native language. I've got Japanese translations of his books if you're interested, though." She returned with the blu-ray she'd ordered, and Yuki handed over the 7,500 yen. "Oh, he created Cutoru, right? The series that Haiyore! Nyarko-san is based on?"
Akira gave a low chuckle. "Cthulhu. And yes, you're right. You should read the books. They're genuinely scary, and will help you pick up on all sorts of references. Anything else you need?" "Nah, I'm just going to browse a bit." Akira nodded, knowing that the girl liked to make her own discoveries. She went back to her book as Yuki started in the used section, hoping to find some rare gem that someone had sold to the store.
