KARENE, RENEE, CHARR
16. WERE/SHIFTER. FEMALE. NEUTRAL/TRAINER/CAPTIVE OF PRAVUS.
ABOUT THE PLAYER:
OOC Account: Kazza
What do you wish to be called?: Kazza is fine~
Other Characters: Alaya “Rinn” Thyne, Rueke “Susurrus” Fedgyr, Lillian “Lithre” Starling (Articuno), Horace “Hound-Dog” Weaver, Yacov “Yow” Sawyer
BASIC INFORMATION:
Full Name Karene Renee Charr
Nickname(s): Karene is more commonly (or, in most cases, only) known as Kazza
Gender: Female
Age: Sixteen
Allegiance: Neutral – pending her recent arrival in Remoor, Kazza knows little of the dynamics of the region, but will likely become anti-pravus once she acclimatises.
Occupation (Position) : Kazza is a trainer, but mostly earns money from odd-jobs and, on occasion, pick-pocketing. At the current time, however, she is a captive of Pravus.
Species: A Were or a Shifter (Essentially a Mutant)
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE:
Hair: Kazza has thick, brown hair, which starts dark at the roots and becomes lighter towards the tips, which are a golden-blonde and come down to the bottom of her shoulder-blades. The odd gold streak also runs through her hair, as well as a few odd russet ones. It is often messy and tangled, and has not met with the blade of a pair of scissors in years.
Eye Color: Dark brown
Height: Roughly 166cm
Build: Kazza is of about average build at first glance, but is slightly skinnier and more well-muscled than a normal human
Skintone: Lightly tanned skin with a few freckles
Other Appearance Information: Though a rare freak of nature, Kazza has very little to mark her out as different from amongst a crowd – she stands at around the average height for her age and gender, has a fairly typical, common skin colour, and has normal coloured hair and eyes. She, of course, has her scars and such – one on the back of her head, hidden by hair, is a jagged line of about three centimetres in length, and her elbows and knees have slightly darker skin from constant grazes there. Underneath her typically baggy and unassuming attire, though, her back is littered with bite marks and slashes, as are her shoulders and thighs. There is also a hardly noticeable birthmark in the shape of a rough triangle on her left calve, and her elbows are hyper-extendable, to a small degree.
Her clothes are just as plain as her initial visage, with her only choice of pants being jeans, no matter what the weather – if it gets hot, she’ll simply change into short jeans. Typically, her shirt will be a dark colour with a picture on the front – either that or a cotton riding shirt, although often you won’t be able to tell, as she generally wears either a hoodie (her favourite is a black converse all-stars one) or her bomber jacket (a big, baggy Batman one). As for her headgear, Kazza will don either a black Mango cap with stickers on the bill, or a navy beanie with the geeky slogan, “+15 Frost Resistance” on the front, complete with picture of icicles, if she chooses to put anything on her head.
This, of course, is only what she looks like when she’s human. As a shifter, she can turn into literally any animal or Pokemon, real or imagined. As a werewolf, she’s also obliged by the cycle of the moon to become a human-wolf hybrid during the night of the full moon.
Her werewolf form rarely differs, though, with her fur remaining the same colour as her hair, and her eyes retaining their muddy hue. In this form, she stands at a staggering 212cm when on her hind legs and fully upright. Add a set of sharp, white teeth and long, ragged claws, as well as a wippety tail, and you’ve completed the picture.

Personality:Kazza can be prone to random mood swings at times, and can go from happy and sociable to quiet and shy in a heartbeat, depending on how severe the change. She also has a habit of back-chatting the wrong people, or just people in general (if they’re not annoying her to no end, though, she’ll generally apologise).
- Loyal; Loyalty means a lot to Kazza – if you’re her friend, she’ll stand by your side in times of crisis, and defend your honour and name on your behalf. She’s a friend for life, really, and she would never intentionally hurt someone she cares about, nor talk about them behind their back. She tends to expect the same in return, though, and if you betray her trust, you’ll have a hard time getting it back, as she always remembers things like that, and it can take a long time for her to build that sort of trust in the first place.
- Stubborn/Hot-headed; A downside to the were’s personality is her stubbornness – sure, it’s great when she’s attempting a difficult task, but not so great when she’d participating in an argument. She does, however, know when to just let things go, but will bluntly refuse to change her beliefs or concede to defeat unless something more important than pride is at stake, or if she can see that she’s obviously wrong. Even then, it takes a lot of effort for her to back down once she’s been riled up.
- Intelligent; Despite her rough upbringing, Kazza is not unintelligent – she’s quite the opposite, in fact. She learns quickly, and absorbs new information like a sponge, especially if it’s relatively trivial. Her creative side also shines through in her writing abilities, as well as her sketches, although she tends to become distracted easily when working on a long and painstaking story or drawing.
- Shy/Cautious/Nervous; While you mightn’t think it, this werewolf is actually quite shy, and is incredibly nervous about talking to strangers, especially if there is a chance that she will encounter them again later – but only if they’re human, or partly human (she has no such problems with animals or Pokemon). She’s also a rather nervous person, especially around crowds, and tends to become twitchy and anxious when stressed.
- Somewhat random;
BACKGROUND:
History:
- Orphan; Karene Renee Charr was not born into a happy, normal family. In fact, Kazza herself doesn’t know who her parents are – when she was just an infant, she was found on the doorstep of an orphanage in Jhoto, with only a short letter, begging the orphanage to care for the child, and stating her name and birthdate. The orphanage took her in, and that was where she spent the early years of her life
- Early Years; From the age of one up until she turned four, Kazza was pretty much a loner – the orphanage was under-funded and under-staffed, and all of the other kids there were older and uninterested in making friends with some weird kid. So, Kazza spent the first four years of her life without any close friends, spending most of her time by herself.
- Anna; Aged five, Kazza had just started school when Anna arrived at the orphanage – she was the same age as her, and the two quickly became good friends, spending almost all of their time together. This happy friendship would last for years, as the two went through school and childhood together.
- Late-Night Stroll; Six years after the arrival of her best-friend, Kazza was out for a late-night stroll after having snuck out to the park by herself. She was halfway home when she heard something behind her, and, before she could turn to look, was attacked. The beast tore through clothes, skin and muscle alike, scratching and biting her back. Bleeding and in shock, Kazza squirmed out from underneath the creature and ran, turning down streets she didn’t recognise and running and running and running, soon leaving the familiar places of her upbringing. She didn’t stop until the sun rose the next day, at which point she collapsed.
- Pity; When she awoke, she was in a hospital, hooked up to a drip and wrapped in bandages. It hurt to move, and everything smelt wrong. The slightest noise was agony, and colours were so vibrant that every time she examined her surroundings, she was assaulted by headaches. Under sedation, she couldn’t speak, and the days stretched on. Recovery was slow, and the doctors refused to allow her to return to the nursery until they were sure the wounds had healed without complications. By the time they had, though, it was too late.
- First Infected Full-Moon; The full moon’s power struck the night before she was to be taken back to the orphanage. The beginning of the shift was a shock to Kazza, and the other occupants of the room – her hair spread across her body, and shortened, as her limbs and face elongated. The sounds of stretching muscles and bones were nearly drowned out by the agonised screams of the girl, until they were cut short as her vocal chords began to change abruptly. Doctors flocked in, and stood in shock as Kazza changed. When the shift finished, everyone stood in stunned silence for a few seconds as the beast reared its head and sniffed the air. Then, the screams began as the beast lunged at the nearest human.
- Aftermath; Kazza awoke the next morning in a field of long grass, covered in blood and incredibly stiff. Despite the haziness that surrounded the last night, it didn’t take much for her to realise what had occurred in that hospital. Shocked, the girl sat for an hour and stared into the distance. When she finally managed to stir herself from her stupor, she came to the conclusion that she had to leave, and that she could never return. She couldn’t even say goodbye to her friend – it was too dangerous. She was too dangerous. Kazza, with only the tattered clothes on her back, began to walk in the opposite direction from everything that she had known and loved.
- Kanto; The girl now had to live off the kindness of strangers and her own wits, often walking long distances and rarely staying in one place for very long. The full moons were spent as far away from humans as possible, and, over the course of a year, she slowly learned to control the beast. She also realised her ability to shift into whatever animal, person or Pokemon she could imagine, a useful talent for a lone child travelling through the region. With her full-moon rage under control, she stowed away on a boat, destined for the region of Kanto, which would take a month to reach the other region, by which time she would be fourteen – three years on the run, constantly looking over her shoulder, terrified of discovery.
- Rocket; She hadn’t been in the region for long when she slipped up, shifting by accident in public. Even though she left town the next day, Kazza was quickly pursued by the notorious Team Rocket. She was barely even aware that such an organisation even existed. It became a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, with her always just barely staying ahead and out of the Team’s grip. Until, one day, she slipped up – literally, tumbling down a hill, straight into a net, breaking her arm in the process. And, just like that, she was captured.
- Captivity; Curiosity about her genetic structure and abilities was almost tangible from the scientists, as they performed various tests, many painful and few sanctioned by any government. Months of agony and torture drew on and on, as she refused to cooperate. Then, one day, a chance at freedom – a latch not properly done up, a lock not quite pressed shut, and she was out, and running, fleeing from Rocket like a bat out of hell.
- Slums; After walking for days, Kazza stopped in a distant city, sleeping on the streets. Over time, a small band of Pokemon joined her, two strangely coloured Growlithes and a shiny Rattata. They spent the days begging and scrounging for food, or stealing if times were desperate. Then came the day that Team Rocket showed up once more, still searching for the shifter, and Kazza knew it was time to leave. Panicking, the rag-tag bunch stowed away on a plane, the security too lazy to check the luggage compartment, and left Kanto once and for all
- Remoor; Her arrival in Remoor was mere days before the release of the ‘miracle compound’. By this stage, though, she was already living inside the city walls, sheltering in the slums. Another new addition to the pack arrived – a strange, mutated Ekans, with rocks for scales. Once again, though, with her uncontrollable full-moon shifts, though, she was quickly discovered, as she could not leave the city walls for her friends’ safety. This ultimately led to her capture at the hands of Pravus.
- Pravus; Kazza, after her capture, wastaken to the Main Pravus base. She has yet to awaken. Her team are currently still in the Slums, awaiting her return.
Pokemon:
Name: Qwesta
Species: Growlithe
Level: 15
Gender: Female
Ability: Intimidate; Lowers opponents Attack during battle
Personality: Brave and Loyal, Qwesta isn’t afraid of much of anything (Save for spiders. Creepy little things with their bazillion eyes and long, hairy legs, not to mention those horrifying, venomous fangs. Euck). She’d brave a million spiders for Kazza, though, and would never question anything that her trainer says. She can’t even imagine Kazza ever being wrong. If she were to find out that Kazza had intentionally lied to her (not that she has), it’d break her little heart. She’s also intensely protective of the werewolf and the rest of the team/pack. If anything tries to harm them, they’d better watch out – their ankles would be getting a good nipping at, and their pants may end up on fire.
She also has a not-so-secret crush on Mirra, and the two often walk side by side, tails brushing up against one another.
Attacks:
- Bite
- Roar
- Ember
- Leer
- Crunch
Name: Mirra
Species: Mutated Growlithe
Level: 13
Gender: Male
Ability: Flash Fire; When hit by Fire-type attacks prevents all damage from Fire attacks and enhances power of own Fire-type attacks by 50%
Personality: A very active little mutant Growlithe, Mirra is often on a sugar-high, except without the sugar. He’s just incredibly hyper, all the time, and really just wants to be friends with everyone (Except for Qwesta whom he wants to be bestest-friends-forever with). He’s quite a handful at times, but is also adorable and heart-meltingly innocent.
The extent of his mutation is a change in fur-colour.
Attacks:
- Bite
- Roar
- Ember
- Leer
Name: Saori
Species: Rattata
Level: 7
Gender: Male
Ability: Run Away; Enables sure getaway from wild Pokémon
Personality: This unusually coloured Rattata is incredibly vain in regards to his tail. He believes that his tail is just that much longer, that much silkier, that much more awesome than anyone else’s. If you touch it without his permission, though, beware of being mauled. He works hard at grooming it day and night to ensure it is clean, and does not take lightly to some random coming along and ruining his hard work. He’ll often sulk for hours if someone insults his tail, after having raged at them silently, of course.
Despite all of this, he’s a curious creature, not afraid to ask questions or to investigate new things, although he’s often content to merely sit on Kazza’s head and watch the world around him (It makes his tail look that much more impressive when he’s at that height, after all). He’ll never admit to enjoying simply riding along on her hat, though, and will vehemently deny the fact.
Attacks:
- Tackle
- Tail Whip
- Quick Attack
- Focus Energy
Name: Amuri
Species: Mutated Ekans
Level: 8
Gender: Female
Ability: Shed Skin; Every turn, it has a 1 in 3 chance of healing from a status condition (BURN, PARALYZE, SLEEP, POISON, FREEZE).
Personality: Amuri is the quietest of the group, shying away from strangers and just generally avoiding new people and not talking, hiding in the hood of Kazza’s jumper and wrapping herself gently around her trainer’s neck, as a way of comforting herself. If the group approaches a crowd, though, she’ll slither down Kazza’s shirt, and coil her cold body around the teenager’s waist, often causing a hilarious show for any onlooker if Kazza is not expecting this, as the shifter writhes around in surprise and shock.
Amuri’s mutation is far more than just a colour-change – her scales are made of stone, and the bands around her neck and the soft underside of her belly have actually grown mould.
Attacks:
- Wrap
- Leer
- Poison Sting
- Iron Tail
ROLE-PLAYING SAMPLE:
((Que random English speech!))
Picture this; you’ve been held in a cell, roughly two-and-a-half by three-and-a-half metres –slightly larger than the average trampoline. You know the exact date and time you are going to die, down to the very minute. You even know how it will happen. You pray that someone is going to come for you, save you, but no one does – this is because it is the government that is carrying out this barbaric act and it is the government to which you make your appeal. What you just imagined now isn’t even close to how inmates on death-row must feel, waiting to be killed.
While the death penalty, thankfully, is no longer used here in Australia, other countries still apply it, and not just developing ones – America is one of the few first world countries that still allow the death penalty to be carried out on their own citizens. This is a horrific breach of human rights and the trust of American citizens, that their rights will be upheld and respected. The Eighth amendment of the American Constitution states: “Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.” If imprisoning a man, informing him of the time and instrument of his demise and forcing him to wait months for this to come true is not ‘cruel’ or ‘unusual’, then what is? This is clearly a form of mental torture, ended only by a brutal, agonising, humiliating death. Not only that, it also sends a nod of approval from a so-called civilised nation to second and third world countries when it comes to their own use of capital punishment.
Seventy-seven countries around the world practice the death penalty, but only America is a democratic, first-world country. While America is, in essence, endorsing the death penalty, Australia, by doing nothing about this practice, also condones the killing of citizens by the government. As role models to developing countries, we should be pressuring America to abolish the death penalty by vocally expressing our views that the death penalty is simply not OK, that it is not acceptable to kill another human being under the pretence of “justice”.
Skewed concept of “justice” aside, there is always the possibility that the executed could have been innocent, as history has shown countless times before - Statistics show that wrongful incarceration and sentencing to death is not uncommon, with 68% of people on Death Row released due to new evidence proving their innocence, or serious legal flaws in their cases. In all likelihood then, some of these cases slip through the cracks, and a guiltless human is killed. Unfortunately, the last person to be executed in Australia, Ronald Ryan, was not acquitted, and is believed to have been innocent – years after his hanging for the murder of a prison guard, another guard came forth, claiming that he had shot at the accused, but may have hit the guard. What is to keep something like this from happening again? If the accused is simply incarcerated, there is the chance to make things right. If they are executed, the best the government can do to amend the wrongful punishment is to pardon the deceased’s corpse.
Yet another reason why the death penalty needs to be abolished is that it costs more than incarcerating someone for life and does nothing to deter crime. On average, it costs ten times more to execute someone than to imprison them until they are paroled, released or die from old age or other causes. Not only is life imprisonment cheaper, it deters crime just as much, if not more, than the death penalty. In 2010, there was a significant difference in the amount of murders committed in states of America that enforced the death penalty, and states that don’t, with ‘lifer’ states having 25% less murders. In fact, a number of studies have speculated that the abolition of the death penalty tends to lead to a drop in crime rates in the years that follow. This shows that even the claim of using capital punishment as a deterrent is invalid, inadequate and incorrect.
We, as Australians, have a duty to be the example to the rest of the world, to use our voices to condemn this barbaric practice, to prevent further killing of innocents. In the eyes of the world, I am not quite a child, but not quite an adult, yet I have the decency to see that the death penalty, the slaying of other humans, is wrong, and I have the courage to tell others why this is wrong. So, all of you here today, please, for the sake of all the men and women who were murdered in cold blood, who were a part of a family, just as you are, who are no different than you and I, stand up and speak out. You can make a start today to end this abhorrent act, by signing this petition from Amnesty International, in an effort to put an end to the death penalty in America.
Help show the rest of the world that the death penalty is wrong, and help save the lives of countless human beings – because no one should be allowed to kill another human being, no matter how justified that killing may seem. Thank you.
